Hair-transplant surgeon and practising GP · UK GMC 7126076

Born in Norway, Dr Harpreet Kalra brings a personal connection to Scandinavia. He assesses whether surgery is suitable, examines the donor area and plans treatment around each patient’s pattern of hair loss.

Consultation and treatment planning

How Dr Kalra plans a hair transplant

A consultation is used to understand what has changed, how quickly the hair loss is progressing and what the patient wants to improve. Dr Kalra examines the scalp and existing hair before deciding whether transplantation is a sensible option.

The donor area at the back and sides of the scalp is central to that decision. Hair calibre, follicular grouping, miniaturisation, previous extraction and the amount of coverage required all affect how many grafts can be moved without leaving the donor area visibly depleted. Our donor-area guide explains why that supply must be planned over a patient’s lifetime.

Designing the recipient area

A frontal hairline or crown restoration is planned differently from a beard transplant or an eyebrow transplant. Each recipient area has its own natural direction, angle and graft distribution, and the design must still look appropriate if the surrounding native hair becomes thinner later.

Choosing the right approach

After the recipient area, donor characteristics, graft requirement, hairstyle and any previous surgery have been reviewed, Dr Kalra can explain whether an FUE hair transplant, DHI hair transplant or FUT hair transplant is suitable. These methods differ in how follicles are harvested or placed, so the treatment should follow the assessment rather than being chosen before the patient has been examined.
